Is Basement Waterproofing Paint The Answer?

When many homeowners face a wet basement or one that leaks, they often turn a simple solution like basement waterproofing paint. And why not, compared to the expense of a complete waterproofing system, a few gallons of waterproofing paint seems like a much better idea. But is it really?

The premise behind this type of paint is pretty simple; Brush it onto the walls in 2-3 coats and it will keep water from coming through the basement walls. While this is partly true, this isn't going to be a permanent solution that will leave you with a dry basement for years to come.

Why Waterproofing Paint May Not Be The Answer

Waterproof paint does an excellent job of sealing the inside of a basement wall. But it doesn't address the true problem of eliminating the water sitting on the outside of the wall. And that's the real issue you need to fix.

You can literally put on 10-20-100 coats of paint, but it will never hold the water back. Once the hydrostatic pressure builds from the backed up water, it will force itself through at some point.

The Permanent Solution

Instead of spending time and money on waterproof paint, sealers or other quick fixes that doesn't work on a permanent solution. In most cases this will always involve a sump pump and rain tile. Of course, there are other options available as well.

A complete waterproofing system from a company like B-Dry is a permanent solution, albeit an expensive one. But if you plan on turning your basement into a living and entertainment area, it may be the best solution.

Getting rid of the water coming into your basement can be tricky. And while basement-waterproofing paint seems like it is the answer, it really isn't.
