Concrete Block
Waterproofing Products - What Are Your
Options?
When it comes to keeping your concrete block
basement dry, finding a good concrete block waterproofing
product is essential. It can literally mean the difference
between having a wet basement, or even a moldy one, and having
a nice dry area to build a family room in or have plenty of
storage room in. With that said, here are some of your options
to choose from with concrete block waterproofing products.
Liquid Membranes
This liquid coating is applied using a
spray, roller, or a trowel. When it dries or cures, it will
have a rubbery coating on the surface of the concrete block
which will keep moisture out.
Sheet Membranes
These products are self-adhering rubberized
membranes. When applied, a water polyurethane film is coated
with a rubberized asphalt to make sheets. These are a step
ahead of the liquid.
Cement Waterproofing
This kind of product assures a very durable
and solid coating. It adheres well to the wall. The cement
product should be combined with an acrylic additive and then
mixed together. Afterwards, it may be applied to the wall using
a long handled brush.
Built-up Systems
This concrete block waterproofing product is composed of
asphalt and felt. Using a concrete primer is the first step in
doing the system. Heat the tar component in a large kettle and
then apply it to the wall. Immediately after applying the tar,
apply a layer of perforated felt and extend all the way out to
the footing. Three staggered layers of felt are needed to build
and then cover the entire wall with the final coat of the tar.
Although there is considerable effort involved, the product
works pretty well.
Surface Preparation
Waterproofing needs clean and dry walls. The footings should
be thoroughly swept and scraped off. Any loose material on the
footing walls will need to be removed. The reason behind this
preparation is that everything should be clean and dry so that
the waterproofing materials will stick and be durable.
