How To Have A Dry Basement - 3 Simple Tips

Dry basements are one of the areas that most all homeowners struggle with at some point in time. Home improvements stores are filled with various basement waterproofing products designed to help eliminate wet basements, and one of the most often asked questions is always, how can I have a dry basement?

Of course, you can go out and get a waterproofing contractor to come in and install a complete waterproofing system in your basement. In most cases that can cost from $10,000 to upwards of $40,000 depending on the size of your basement and the severity of the problem. But, before doing that, put these tips into action first. It may solve the problem of a wet basement without the big expense.

1. Prevent water from getting into the basement - I know that sounds like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at how often the water comes into the basement because of drainage issues.

Be sure your ground slopes away from your foundation at least 15-25 feet into the yard. If you find it doesn't, begin adding dirt and grading it away from your home. You have to get the round by your house to become higher than the rest of your yard.

2. Gutters and downspouts - I can already hear some saying how in the world does guttering on my roof have anything to do with water in my basement? Simple, if you have faulty gutters or none at all, the rainwater is only going to go right down the sides of your home and into your basement.

The same with downspouts. Be sure they are not only doing their job, but that they are draining the water out and away from your foundation. Don't make the mistake of letting them empty out on one of those two foot long slabs that you often see. Be sure to drain them 10 feet out.

3. Use a working sump pump - Do you have a sump pump in your basement? If not, be sure to get one. They are inexpensive and you can even dig out the hole yourself with a little work. This is a good step to put into action before forking over the money for a big waterproofing project.

Having a dry basement is not difficult in many circumstances if you follow these 3 tips.
